Villager killed, 4 others injured in shovel attack
A MENTALLY ill man attacked several villagers with a shovel yesterday, killing one, leaving another in a critical condition and lightly injuring three others in the Pudong New Area.
The 49-year-old assailant, Fei Zhiguo, died when police officers and assistants apprehended him.
A senior couple were attacked by Fei when they were working on their farm about 7am yesterday in Shenzhuang Village.
Zhong Senwen, 82, died after being rushed to hospital. His wife, Chen Wenmei, 74, was still in a critical condition as of yesterday evening.
Doctors said she lost consciousness due to excessive blood loss. She sustained a fractured skull and had several deep cuts on her head. One of her fingers was also broken, doctors said.
Family members of the victims blamed Fei's family for failing to take precautions and said they should take responsibility and pay compensation.
"He's like a time bomb, and he was capable of hurting people at any time," Zhong and Chen's grandson said.
Shocked villagers said Fei had a long history of terrorizing people in the community. They usually gave him what he wanted so he would leave them alone.
"If he pointed to vegetables, I gave him the vegetables," a villager said. "Otherwise he might break a window or destroy something else."
Fei's family said they had increased the dose of his medicine in recent days because he seemed more unstable.
"He beat us after getting up this morning, and we couldn't stop him. He said he was too excited," said Zhou Yaqing, Fei's wife.
The family said Fei had the mental disorder for more than 10 years.
He had been taking prescription medication to control the disease.
