Visa warning for foreigners
FOREIGNERS should beware of fraudulent visa agents after dozens were scammed and some even lost their passports, warns Shanghai Exit-Entry Administration Bureau.
The victims, mostly from Southeast Asia and Africa, face police detention because their visas meant they were staying illegally in China, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.
One man came from the Philippines to Shanghai on business last year with only a travel visa valid for one month. He paid 6,000 yuan (US$882) to a visa agent to extend this to six months, but the agent disappeared with his visa and money, the report said.
Police suggested foreigners extend their visas through the exit-entry bureau, telephone 2895-1900.
