Warehouse fire sends smoke over city

A WAREHOUSE in the Pudong New Area went up in flames yesterday afternoon, spewing black smoke into the sky.

Firefighters arrived shortly after the blaze broke about 12:30pm and extinguished the flames around 90 minutes later.

No casualties were reported in the blaze that destroyed a warehouse building at 8 Xiangyangxu Road in Pudong's Heqing Town. An area of 1,800 square meters was affected, police said.

Burning plastics, chemicals and rugs in the warehouse produced dense smoke that billowed into the sky and could be seen dozens of kilometers away from high-rises in the downtown area.

Web users uploaded photographs of the dark smoke seen from different locations.

Residents in a nearby Qinfen Village said the dense smoke darkened the sky above the village.

The smell of burning spread widely, and local environmental protection authorities tested for environmental hazards.

But no harmful gases were detected and no danger was posed to the environment, according to Pudong's emergency department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
