Warning sign theft ends in rider's death

FENCES and warning signs have been erected around a construction pit after one man died and two people were injured in separate incidents in Minhang District over the weekend.

The hole, on Beidi Road near Nanhua Road, is part of drainage facilities under construction.

Construction workers said there used to be warning signs near the hole, which was about to be sealed, but they had been stolen.

A 38-year-old moped driver died of severe head injures after falling into the deep hole on Friday.

The man, surnamed Xu, was on his way to work night shift at a nearby construction site with a colleague surnamed Zhang when the accident happened about 8:40pm.

Zhange had gone back to look for his colleague when he didn't see him at work. He blamed the accident on the lack of warning signs and lights.

Jiang Zhipeng, a rescuer, said in a TV interview that several people had been injured after falling into the hole. In two other cases over the weekend, a woman and a man suffered fractures and bruises.

Barriers and signs were being put in place over the weekend.
