Warning sounded on diabetes and high cholesterol resulting in strokes, heart attacks

About 70 percent of diabetes patients die of cardiovascular diseases including stroke and coronary disease, and diabetes patients face a two to four times higher risk of heart attack than other people, medical experts told a diabetes education program in Shanghai.

Cholesterol level, especially low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is the key risk factor for cardiovascular problems, medical experts said, so it is important for diabetes patients to closely monitor the level and take medication to control it.

Dr Zou Dajin from Shanghai's Changhai Hospital, said diabetes can damage the inner walls of blood vessels, making it easier for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol to accumulate there and result in stroke or heart attack.

"Diabetes patients over 40 years old and having hypertension or a family history of coronary heart disease must take medicines to drop the cholesterol level," Zou said.
