Watchdog calls for better regulations to tackle personal information leaks
THE city consumer rights watchdog has called for improved regulations to protect personal information.
Research by the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission that found personal information leakage remains at a serious level, even after a revised consumer rights law was introduced.
The commission organized 100 volunteers and recorded and analyzed the number and content of promotional phone calls and short messages they received over two months.
It found almost all received either promotional text messages or phone calls, many on a daily basis.
They received 788 spam messages and 227 promotional calls in total. Of the phone calls, the majority were about investment, while 27 percent were related to real estate.
Most callers refused to say how they got personal information, but some had correct personal details including addresses, car details, investment account details and apartment information, the commission said.
It’s difficult to track these companies as their true phone number is usually not revealed, the commission said.
Although the revised consumer rights law introduced in March states that the collection of personal information must have the approval of consumers and it bans the abuse of personal information, this needs to be detailed, the commission said.
The responsibility of authorities and punishments should be clarified and supervision should be improved, it said.
