Watchdog plans to tackle web conmen
AUTHORITIES are looking to clamp down on online rogue traders with a new system of safeguards for consumers.
The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said yesterday it is considering creating a database of e-commerce sellers.
This would make it easier to monitor their trade, preventing fake selling, unfair competition and trade fraud, protecting both consumers' rights and intellectual property rights.
The bureau is also to commence feasibility studies on an "admittance system" for products sold online.
But officials concede that there will be difficulties as sellers are scattered all over the country, and their powers don't extend beyond the city.
"The e-commerce moni-toring system needs cross-regional cooperation. Working alone, our efforts will not be effective," said Sui Bo, an official with the bureau.
