‘Water knife’ machine to help with road repair projects

Shanghai’s road construction authority will use an innovative water-cutting technique to repair elevated highways, bridges and tunnels across the city next year in an effort to reduce noise.

A water-cutting machine will be used instead of a pile-driving machine to dig holes and remove the old surface of the roads and bridges to be repaired, the Shanghai Urban Construction Road and Bridge Group said today.

The “water knife” reduces noise from over 100 decibels to around 70. It also creates less dust and smoke, said Pan Wei, general manager of the group’s project management department.

Many of the city’s elevated highways and tunnels, including the inner ring highway and Yan’an Road E. Tunnel, are scheduled for renovation next year.

The water-cutting machine was previously used in coalmines and was later applied to urban construction.

The group tested the technique on the Tongji Road Elevated Highway renovation project in July.
