Webber eyes Shanghai despite cancer
COMPOSER Andrew Lloyd Webber said he would bring the long-awaited sequel to "Phantom of the Opera" to Shanghai for its Asian debut despite his diagnosis of early-stage prostate cancer.
The 61-year-old master of musicals is now under treatment and will resume his work schedule by the end of this year. His cancer is in its "very early stage" and he will undergo an operation in days, according to Webber's spokesman.
Webber's company The Real Useful Group said in an e-mail to Shanghai Grand Theater that Shanghai had been chosen for the new show's Asian premiere because Webber said he loved the city, according to Shanghai Morning Post today.
The new production called "Love Never Dies" features same characters as Webber's successful "Phantom of the Opera", only this time the phantom moves to haunt New York's Coney Island.
The sequel is due to open in London in March next year, opening in New York in November 2010 and Australia in 2011.
Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" has run for more than a decade on Broadway, and the composer has won seven Tony Awards, three Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2006.
