Website fined for selling fake necklaces

A popular group-purchase website was fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,570) for ripping off consumers by selling counterfeit Swarovski necklaces, the city's market watchdog announced yesterday.

The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau found that a 148 yuan Swarovski necklace sold at Jigo City, a leading e-commerce platform, was actually made in Yiwu, a small Zhejiang Province city famous for its wholesale accessories as well as small commodities.

The website claimed that more than 200 consumers purchased the necklaces, but that turned out to be a fake figure to attract more consumers, said the bureau.

Officials said inflating the number of buyers is a common tactic to create the impression that the products are popular.

On Tuan.kdslife.com, another top group-buying site, a promotion of dried fruits said hundreds of people bought the blueberries or cranberries, but the bureau found that the trade record showed that only about 10 sales had been made. The bureau ordered the website to remove the promotion and fined it 20,000 yuan.
