Wedding bells ring again for 6,000 couples
THE number of couples who divorced and remarried each other leapt by about 20 percent in Shanghai last year over 2008 figures, Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said today.
More than 6,040 couples applied to remarry each other again last year, most of them aged between 50 and 60, said Zhou Jixiang, director of the bureau's marriage division.
"Most of the couples who remarried found that their original spouse was the most suitable. And some just divorced to take advantage of the country's relocation policy."
Marriages to foreigners fell by about 5 percent last year since 2008, with 2,490 local people marrying overseas citizens. The foreign-related divorce rate, however, rose by about 2 percent.
