Welder dies in gas explosion
A MAN died and a woman was injured when an oil storage tank blew up yesterday at a factory in Qingpu District, a Qingpu government official said today.
The blast occurred at 4:30pm at Biaoma Plant Engineering Company at the intersection of Tianyi Road and Shengli Road, with the fire extinguished 30 minutes later.
A 35-year-old welder died on the scene and a middle-aged woman was sent to hospital with slight injuries to her legs. She is in a stable condition.
Police said the blast was probably caused by faulty operation of welding equipment but the case is still under investigation.
A witness who works at a nearby factory said he heard the blast and saw fire engulfing a two-meter-high oil tank, with flames shooting high into the sky.
