Woman, 18, dies in print-shop fire, blast

AN 18-year-old woman was killed after midnight Monday when her family's print shop caught fire on Hefei Road, Luwan District.

Three nearby shops also burned down, but no one was hurt when the fire devoured flammable papers and ink in the shop and set off an explosion, said Luwan police.

The print shop at 151 Hefei Road caught fire at 1am yesterday. The cause was under investigation.

Firemen spent 20 minutes putting out the fire and saved about 10 people trapped in their rooms.

The body of the girl, whose name was not released, was found after the fire was put out.

According to the police, the print shop was owned by a couple from Zhejiang Province. The victim was their daughter.

A witness surnamed Ni, who owns a shop nearby, said the explosion in the shop woke him up and he saw fireballs rushing out of the shop.

"The couple ran out of their print shop immediately, as they lived closer to the back door," said Ni.

"But the girl didn't make it, as she slept in the loft and the blaze swept over the flammable things too fast."

Another witness said a 90-year-old woman and two young men were also in serious danger, but firemen held up ladders and saved them.
