Woman awaits DNA result to claim her abandoned baby

THE woman who deserted her 3-month-old baby in a Shanghai park last Saturday after quarreling with her husband showed up at the police station again yesterday to claim her boy.

The 22-year-old woman said she was under great pressure and did not want to talk to reporters and she asked the police to skip her DNA test, saying "it was too troublesome."

Police said the result will come out as early as next week. They said the woman left in disappointment after she was told that the DNA test is a required procedure for her to claim her baby.

The woman had tried unsuccessfully to get the baby from a local hospital on Sunday after the infant was sent there. The hospital said it rejected her request even though she showed the baby's birth certificate.

The hospital said a DNA test will take about two weeks and cost more than 1,000 yuan. After claiming the boy, his parents will have to pay for all his hospital expenses.

The boy was found abandoned in the city's Zhongshan Park on Saturday afternoon and was sent to the hospital by police.

After the quarrel, the husband went home in Chengdu, Sichuan Province while the wife went to Wuxi where she has a job. But she returned the next day to get her baby and police asked her husband to come to Shanghai for investigation.
