Woman dies, 7 injured in gas blast

A WOMAN was killed and five firefighters and two policemen were injured in a gas explosion in the Pengpu Neighborhood of Zhabei District about 10pm yesterday.
Residents of the building on Pingshun Road and Wenxi Road said they called the police after they smelt gas in the building yesterday evening.
Police officers reached the site and checked each apartment in the building for gas leaks. They found the gas was coming from a woman's apartment on the fourth floor.
When they got to the apartment and opened the door, the gas exploded, blowing out the windows.
The woman died on the scene and five firefighters and two policemen were injured. All seven emergency workers were rushed to Changhai Hospital suffering burns to their faces. All are now in stable condition.
Neighbors said the woman was trying to kill herself by gas poisoning and the police were injured trying to save her, but the cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
