Woman dies after being thrown from convertible

A YOUNG woman died on Saturday night when she was thrown from a sporty convertible that crashed in downtown Hongkou District, police said.

The 20-year-old victim surnamed Xu was thrown from the lilac customized BMW 335 after it apparently lost control. No other vehicle was involved.

The driver surnamed Tan, Xu's boyfriend, was injured in the crash and is in stable conditions, said police.

Officers said the car was being driven at high speed.

The crash happened about 9pm on Zhongshan Road N1 near Xitiyuhui Road, in drizzly weather.

The car first swerved to the left, striking a column of the elevated Inner Ring Road, then swerved to the right and crashed into greenery, witnesses said.

An insurance expert examining the wreckage yesterday said that had Xu fastened her seat belt, the outcome may have been different.

"She wouldn't have been thrown out of the car if she had fastened the seat belt," he said.
