Woman dies, four hurt as airport-bound cab crashes

A WOMAN was killed and three other family members and a driver injured around dawn yesterday when a cab slammed into a wall on the way to Pudong International Airport, police said.

The injured included a five-year-old boy, police said.

The speeding taxi ran into a wall at the fork of the airport's south interchange, which leads to departures on one side of Terminal 2 and arrivals on the other. Police said the accident happened about 5:10am.

The woman who was killed was in the front seat and not wearing a seat belt. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The taxi driver and three other passengers were sent to Pudong New Area People's Hospital. Their injuries were not life threatening, police said.

Witnesses said the driver was bleeding from the head.

A witness surnamed Tao said the driver was heading to arrivals when he suddenly turned. Tao said the driver may have been going the wrong way and tried to change routes.
