Woman drowns

A woman drowned yesterday after backing her car into a river in the city's Baoshan District.

Local police said the woman, her identity not revealed, was backing her Buick outside a Buddhist temple around 3pm. But the car jerked back, knocked off a parapet behind and fell into the Lianqi River. It floated for a few seconds before submerging into the four-meter-deep murky water. Due to the river's depth and rapid flow, the car and the driver were not located and dredged up until 10:20pm. The woman was found dead, police said. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but the woman was believed to have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake pedal.
