Woman gets 7 years in jail for angrily killing baby

A WOMAN who beat and suffocated her four-month-old daughter to death after becoming angry over disputes at the family's home in the Pudong New Area was sentenced to seven years in prison, a district court ruled yesterday.

The woman killed her only child even though her family previously had complained to police about the beatings.

After fighting with her husband and his grandmother about 7am on July 3, the woman, surnamed Gao, vented her anger on her daughter, officials said.

"I was so, so angry at that time. I beat my daughter because my husband and his family are very fond of her," Gao told prosecutors during the investigation.

Gao said she became angrier at lunchtime on that day when her daughter refused to eat powdered milk. She beat the baby six times. She found the girl was dead before she realized what she had done and called for help from her family and police, according to prosecutors.

A forensic test showed the infant had many bruises throughout her body and died of suffocation by force to the neck. Gao pleaded guilty.

The Pudong New Area People's Court heard that Gao and her husband married in December 2011. The couple welcomed the baby in March and lived with Gao's in-laws.

Family disputes cropped up in May when Gao felt the baby had become a great financial burden. She began quarreling with her in-laws over money issues and began to beat her daughter.

Gao's mother-in-law said Gao would beat the baby every time she got angry.

The elderly woman said she remembered once Gao threw the baby onto a bed several meters away.

Prosecutors said police had warned Gao about one week before the incident after the family said she beat the baby after an argument with her husband.

Since Gao turned herself in and was regretful, the court said it was sentencing her to seven years in prison for intentional injury. The harshest punishment for the crime is death.
