Woman gives birth in mall toilet
AN unmarried, 22-year-old local woman left hospital yesterday after giving birth to a baby girl in a toilet stall inside a shopping mall on Nanjing Road E. on Sunday.
The woman was overcome by labor pains inside a second-floor toilet cubicle at the Yong'an Department Store about 12:30pm on Sunday, store staff said.
The woman screamed for help, they said. "The floor's sanitary worker on duty was the first to be alerted by the screams and people quickly rushed to help her," a sanitary worker said.
Several store workers and customers helped move the woman out to get ready for the ambulance after security staff broke open the stall, which was locked from inside.
"One worker helped by holding the baby carefully in her hands, while she was still attached to her mother via the umbilical cord and others called an ambulance," a staff member said yesterday.
The baby weighed 2,420 grams at birth, doctors said. The woman carried the baby to full term, local media reported.
Mother and child were admitted into the Shanghai No. 1 Maternity and Child's Health Hospital.
"She had many blood stains on her face and looked very pale," Dr Li Zhengdong told Shanghai Television news on Sunday. The hospital said the woman was released yesterday morning but would not comment on the status of the infant.
