Woman injured in fire jump

A WOMAN, who is thought to be mentally disabled, was injured when she fell from the window of her fourth-floor apartment during a fire on Tuesday night in Hongkou District. Officials said clotheslines and awnings broke her fall, saving her life.

The woman is believed to have started the fire herself, Hongkou police said.

About 10pm, the woman was sitting on a windowsill when the blaze broke out. She fell out when the flames intensified, witnesses said.

"I drew back my curtains and saw the woman outside my window," a neighbor on the third floor said. "She was hanging upsidedown from my awning. She slipped and fell."

A doctor said she broke both legs in the fall, but wasn't in critical condition.
