Woman jumps to death after kitchen explodes

A 78-year-old woman died after jumping off the balcony of her sixth-floor apartment this morning after a gas explosion in the kitchen.
The woman surnamed Jin fell on the roof of a hardware store below her apartment in Yangpu District and was announced dead as soon as she was rushed to the Xinhua Hospital.
The cause of the gas explosion was still under investigation.
The tragedy happened at about 8:38am when a big explosion jolted residents in a complex at 8 Jingyu Road M.
"Black fumes billowed out of the windows of her apartment and flames burst out as well," said a security guard, Huang Weitao, at a nearby building. He called the police immediately.
"She was conscious and was not burnt by the fire," said a neighbor, Wang Daquan, who saw Jin's jump. "We shouted at her not to jump, but she didn't listen."
Jin was living in an elderly home in Baoshan District and came home to spend the Spring Festival with her son, neighbors said. Her son was not at home when the explosion happened.
