Woman jumps to death with her baby
A woman died with her newborn girl yesterday after jumping from her ninth-floor apartment building in the city's Minhang District.
The woman, not identified, was about 30 and her baby daughter was about six months old.
The cause of her jump was still unclear. Neighbors said the family was wealthy and was living in the building temporarily because their house was in decoration. The woman probably suffered a post-partum depression, they said.
Police did not comment on the tragedy last night.
The jump happened at about 4:50pm in a residential complex at 560 Heqing Road. Neighbors said they heard a huge "thump" and found the woman and her baby lying on the lawn in front of Building 97.
A woman who was passing by when the jump happened, said she thought the woman had jumped with a doll until she saw a grandma rushing out of the building and holding the baby girl crying.
The mother and her baby were sent to the Shanghai 5th People's Hospital and were later pronounced dead.
Neighbors said the family lived with husband's parents and they seldom quarreled. "The family seemed to be happy and no one would've thought of such tragedy," said a neighbor living downstairs.
