Woman killed as car backs into bus stop

A woman in her 80s was killed after a 68-year-old man backing up his car slammed into a bus stand in the Pudong New Area yesterday morning.

Police detained the driver.

The victim was sitting on the steel bench chatting with two other elderly women at a bus stop on the sidewalk of Jinkou Road when the car veered toward them about 9:30am, according to witnesses. The car bumped over a litter bin and then slammed into the bench. A dozen passers-by worked together to move the car and free the victim, who was lodged between the vehicle and the advertising light box behind the bench. The other women managed to escape the crash. The victim was pronounced dead in the hospital.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident. Some witnesses said based on the sudden speed increase, the driver could have mistakenly hit the accelerator when backing the car.

The driver looked frightened and simply waited inside the car until police reached him, according to witnesses.
