Woman killed lover: police

A WOMAN killed her lover in case her husband found out about their affair, police said yesterday.

The woman has been detained by Jiading District police and her brother-in-law is also being held for helping her dispose of the body.

The arrests follow the discovery of a body by a gardener in woodland in the district's Loutang Town on June 24.

Police said it was decomposed but reckoned the man had been dead for a week.

They checked missing persons files and found that a 27-year-old surnamed Cheng from Anhui Province had been reported missing at about the same time. A false tooth in the dead body's mouth fitted a description of one of Cheng's.

He had worked in a hot-pot restaurant and when police questioned his colleagues they found that a Henan Province native, Liu Nannan, had been absent from work on June 19 and quit her job the next day.

She had also left her temporary residence in Zhuxiao Town on June 19.

Further investigation revealed that Liu had brought her brother-in-law, Ren Shaishai, who also works in the restaurant, to her residence on a red scooter about 4am on June 19.

Surveillance tapes showed Liu riding a tricycle followed by Ren on a red scooter from Zhuxiao Town to Loutang Town at about 4:36am, police said. The tricycle's cart was covered but detailed examination of the pictures revealed a foot hanging out.

Police also discovered that Liu's husband was due to be released from prison on June 19 after a seven-month sentence for theft.

Police found Ren at the restaurant and caught Liu in Baiqiang Town on June 26.

Liu is said to have confessed that she had had an affair with Cheng. She got him drunk and suffocated him on June 18 because she feared their relationship would be exposed when her husband returned.
