Woman needs 80 stitches in attack by ex

POLICE have detained a man who cut his ex-girlfriend more than 20 times all over her body on Saturday evening in the Pudong New Area when he failed to win her back.

The victim, a 31-year-old woman surnamed Gan, had to have 80 stitches on her face, hands and arms after the assault.

She was listed yesterday in stable condition at a local hospital, doctors said.

The incident occurred about 8:30pm on Saturday when Gan met her ex-boyfriend, surnamed Zhang, a 39-year-old Hunan Province native, asking him to return a bag of hers that he had taken, Gan said.

Zhang insisted that Gan should get back together with him but after Gan refused and threw a bag of crayfish at him, Zhang became furious and cut her more than 20 times with a knife, police said.

"The woman was sitting on the roadside, with blood all over her face and her hands still bleeding," said a witness surnamed Yin.

Gan said that she decided to break up with Zhang after he beat her with a big iron lock on July 17, sending her to the hospital for 10 stitches.

Gan asked to meet Zhang on Saturday in order to get back a bag she said he had taken away on Friday.
