Woman sentenced for syringe stabbing
A PET store owner was given six months' jail term yesterday for stabbing a man with a syringe during an argument over a picture of a bulldog.
Zhang Rong, 30, was given a grace period of six months, which means she will not be imprisoned if she behaves well during the period.
The victim, Richard Alan Cappo, a 40-year-old American, runs a trade company in Shanghai. He also raises bulldogs.
On November 9, 2007, Cappo was told a pet store in Jing'an District was using a picture of one of his bulldogs on an advertisement.
He visited the store the next day and saw a picture of his bulldog in the window.
Cappo told Zhang that she had used the picture of his pet without his permission. Zhang showed Cappo her own bulldog, claiming it was the one in the ad.
"It was a blatant lie," Cappo told the court. "Her dog's fur had a different color."
Zhang admitted to Cappo, who speaks Chinese, that she had cut the picture of the dog from the Pet Life magazine.
Cappo said the bulldog in the magazine was his dog. He had paid the magazine 3,910 yuan (US$572) to publish his dog's picture to advertise his dog-breeding business.
The two sides began to quarrel and Cappo's face was scratched by Zhang.
Zhang's husband joined the scuffle. Zhang snatched a syringe used for pets and stabbed Cappo's head, the court heard.
Police arrived and broke up the fight. Cappo suffered a slight brain injury and a fractured left leg.
Zhang argued she used the syringe in self-defense.
