Woman strangled by scarf

A WOMAN was strangled by her own scarf after it became entangled in the wheel of an illegal three-wheeler taxi in Putuo District.

The accident happened on Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Zhenguang Road and Qingyu Road.

The woman was riding at the back of the three-wheel vehicle with her daughter, said the driver, surnamed Lu.

"Suddenly, I heard the sound of wailing from behind," said Lu. He stopped the vehicle and found the woman had slid to the ground unconscious.

Lu saw that the woman's blue scarf was wrapped tightly around her neck. Part of the scarf was caught in one of the back wheels of the three-wheeler. He called the emergency services, who pronounced the woman dead.

Police said later she was strangled by her 2-meter-long scarf. It had slipped between the seat and the wheel.

Shanghai has recently announced a crackdown on illegal three-wheeler and motorcycle taxi services.
