Woman throws baby into Huangpu River

A YOUNG woman threw a 2-month-old baby into the Huangpu River last night, drowning it.

Police are questioning the woman, who is said to be the infant's mother, Shanghai Evening Post reported today.

The infant was congenitally disabled, nearby residents told the newspaper.

Witnesses said the woman deliberately threw the baby into the river at Longhua Binjiang Square in Xuhui.

"We heard crying and saw a baby struggling in the river," a witness said, adding that onlookers had tried to save the baby with sticks, but failed.

The baby's body was finally recovered about 20 minutes later. The baby may have been a girl – it was wearing red pants. Witnesses said the young woman watched the baby being carried away by the river but stood still, crying.

A young man arrived soon afterwards saying he was the woman's husband. He said his wife was mentally ill, Xinmin Evening News reported. Both were taken away by police.

Nearby residents said they were migrant workers from Jiangxi Province. The couple had visited many hospitals seeking help for their child and had quarreled about letting the baby die.

The husband came looking for his wife and child after finding them missing from home yesterday afternoon.
