Woman's body found after blaze

A WOMAN was found dead yesterday after firefighters had put out a blaze in her home in downtown Xuhui District.

Police said the woman, surnamed Zhao, was 56 years old, and an investigation into her death and the fire had begun.

Neighbors said that the woman's son had gone missing and her husband was not at home at the time of the incident.

The alarm was raised just after 5pm, police said.

After the fire had been extinguished, witnesses said they could see blood in the third-floor residence.

Neighbors said they had heard the sounds of a quarrel before the fire broke out.

The woman's son was 27 and had been unemployed since he had graduated from college, said a neighbor, surnamed Chen, who knew the family. He said mother and son had often quarreled about the son's lack of a job and his staying at home using his parents' money.

The parents, Shanghai natives, used to teach in northern China's Heilongjiang Province and were "nice people," said neighbors.
