Woman's corpse sparks investigation

A MAN aged in his 60s is being questioned by police after a young woman's body was found in a 4-meter-deep flooded manhole in the green area of a residential complex in Pudong.

Police are investigating the case but declined to reveal any other details.

On Monday afternoon, the corpse was found in the flooded manhole in Yangyuan No.2 Community near the intersection of Zhouhai Road and Xinyuan Road.

The woman was floating upright in the manhole, according to witnesses.

The body was bloated and submerged in water after recent torrential rain, said a witness surnamed Chen.

About 3pm, police officers pulled the body out with ropes.

The manhole, about 6 meters off the sidewalk, is well concealed.

"The body wouldn't have been found if not for the rain," Chen said.

Showers on Sunday flooded the area and workers opened the manhole for drainage the next day and found the body.

A cell phone and pendant were also found near the site.

A man surnamed Jin was taken in by police after the body was found, the residential committee said.

"Jin is allegedly involved in the death of the young woman," said the director of the committee yesterday.

Jin and his wife take care of the garage in the residential area.

Jin usually slept in the garage at night and hardly went out, his sobbing wife said yesterday.

The dead woman worked in a questionable "hair salon" near the residential area, according to the committee, and Jin visited the establishment occasionally.
