World a stitch at a time
UKRAINE Pavilion unveils its art festival yesterday by launching a half-done embroidery piece of the world map.
Visitors to the Ukraine Pavilion can try embroidering the rest of the map, putting in their stitches needle by needle with the help of Tatyana Protcheva, a Ukrainian embroidery master. A rough sketch of the art piece - 1.2 meters long and 0.5 meters wide - has been outlined in silk by the master.
The work is set to be finished within three months. When Expo is over, the completed piece will be displayed in Shanghai for some time and it is planned to be exhibited at the next World Expo in Milan, Italy, in 2015.
"I'm so happy and proud to be here in Shanghai," she said, adding she got the idea to perform embroidery at the Expo during a cultural exchange in the city several months ago.
