Xi calls for comprehensive security, with all nations having a voice

ASIAN countries should promote a mechanism that stresses common, comprehensive and sustainable security that respects and benefits the interests of all Asian members, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during a keynote speech at the 4th summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia this morning.

"Security is inclusive," Xi said. "Each nation should have equal opportunities to participate in the management of regional security. Each nation also has its responsibility on the issue, while no single nation can dominate in the region to harm others' interests."

Xi pointed out that for Asian countries, security has extended from its traditional realm to new challenges that often intertwine - including terrorism, extremism, cross-border crimes, environmental protection, Internet security, financial security and resource security.

The CICA should become a platform for enhancing dialogue and cooperation on security among Asian nations, and a multi-layered communication mechanism should be established, Xi said.

Issues in Asia should be addressed by Asian people, he said.

"China is committed to accelerating peaceful and coordinated growth in the region," Xi said, adding China has resolved territorial disputes with 12 neighboring countries out of the total 14 through friendly negotiations.
