Xuhui District to build civil aviation service zone

Xuhui District plans to build a civil aviation industry service zone along the Huangpu River to include an airworthiness center, pilot training school, airlines’ headquarters and general aviation services center, officials said yesterday.

A pair of twin skyscrapers over 200 meters tall will be built at the river bank to become the zone’s landmark, said Bao Weiguo, chairman of the board with Longhua International Aviation Investment Company, which operates the city's Longhua Airport.

Construction has been completed on the airworthiness center’s main structure. The center on Yunjing Road will be under the East China Civil Aviation Administration of China and mainly serve the domestically developed C919 single aisle passenger jet, Bao said.

“Most of the zone will facilitate the domestic aircraft industry with supporting facilities such as hotels and commercial venues,” said Zou Qi, the company’s deputy manager.

The company yesterday signed a contract with Rocco Forte Hotels to operate a five-star hotel in one of the twin towers.

An educational and training center will be built beside the airworthiness center and hotel to train pilots for domestic airlines. The center will include a Shanghai Civil Aviation School and a base for simulator training, Zou said.
