Year-long 'Shakespeare 400 Season' art event launched in city

SHANGHAI Grand Theater and Shanghai United Media Group launched the "Shakespeare 400 Season" this afternoon. The art season will run for an entire year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death this year.

The celebrated Royal Shakespeare Company's epic history play - Part I of "Henry IV" will kick off the season tomorrow night at the Shanghai Grand Theater.

The company will also stage Part II of "Henry IV" and "Henry V" in Shanghai this week.

Starring Antony Sher and Alex Hassell, the performances feature lavish and nostalgic sets and more than 300 sets of exquisite costumes. 

According to Zhang Zhe, director of Shanghai Grand Theater, tickets for the performances of the company were sold out quickly.

Throughout the year, more than 10 Shakespeare themed performances of drama, opera, ballet and concert will be held for local Shakespeare enthusiastists. Artists will also give creative art lessons for primary and high school students.

Highlights of the art season also include "Hamlet" performed by National Theater Live, ballet show "Romeo and Juliet" by Mariinsky Ballet and the romantic concert "Shakespeare in Love."

Diverse interactive programs of workshops, bazaars and lectures will also be organized for local people to get closer to the charm of Shakespeare.
