SHANGHAI Mayor Ying Yong met a delegation led by Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je on Saturday afternoon, who will attend the 2017 Shanghai-Taipei Forum on Sunday.

Ying briefed on Shanghai’s development plans to the Taipei guests, including building it into a global center for economy, finance, trade and shipping by 2020, forming the core function of an innovation center for science and technology in the world by 2020 and building up a world excellent city and a desirable city of innovation, humanities and ecology by 2040.

He pointed out that Shanghai and Taipei were the earliest cities across the Taiwan Strait to build up mutual visiting scheme and hold regular forums in turn. Since 2010, the two cities have signed more than 26 memorandums of cooperation involving economy and trade, education, health, science and technology.

He also said that “healthy cities,” theme of this year’s forum, was an issue cared and emphasized by both cities and wished the forum a success with joint efforts by both sides.

He also wished the two cities would constantly enhance their cooperation and communication to benefit people across the Strait.

Ko said he saw great changes every time when he came to Shanghai.

“Taipei and Shanghai have respective advantages and should learn from each other and make up for each other’s deficiencies,” he added. “Communication fortifies goodwill while goodwill promotes communication.”

He said the forum had been an important channel for cross-Strait communication and he wished the two cities would further enhance cooperation and exchanges in e-commerce, logistics and health care, and also to promote people-to-people exchanges among the youth.
