Young woman gives birth in downtown mall toilet

A 22-year-old unmarried Shanghai woman gave birth to a baby girl in a toilet stall inside a famous shopping mall on downtown Nanjing Road E around noon yesterday.

The woman was totally unprepared when she was overcome by labor pains inside a second-floor toilet cubicle at the Yong'an Department Store.

Store workers told Shanghai Daily that a female sanitary worker was one of the first to hear the woman screaming for help. The sanitary worker, several store clerks and customers rushed to help her immediately.

"One worker helped by holding the baby in her hands, while the baby was still attached to her mother via the umbilical cord and others called an ambulance," a store clerk told Shanghai Daily.

The woman and infant were rushed to Shanghai No.1 Maternity and Child's Health Hospital.

Hospital officials declined to reveal information about the patients today, saying the woman's parents wanted to protect her privacy. The hospital only said the woman was discharged this morning.

The baby might need more observation since she was delivered inside a toilet, which increased the risk for infection.

The woman is reported to be a Shanghai local, born in April 1990. Her boyfriend visited her at the hospital later and said he would raise the baby together with her. The baby girl weighs 2,420 grams.
