Young woman in 'stab suicide'
AN 18-year-old woman was found dead with stab wounds yesterday morning at her home in Huangpu District, in an apparent suicide.
Ni Meijuan moved to the city from Anhui Province two months ago, according to neighbors.
Police ruled out murder. Why the young woman appears to have taken her own life was unclear yesterday, and officers were investigating.
Ni's body was discovered at about 7:30am at her home at Yuanyangting Lane where she lived with her uncle and aunt, police said.
"I don't know what happened to her. When I woke up this morning, I found her lying there with scissors stabbed in her chest," her uncle said.
The family runs a tailor store and Ni had been working as a tailor for her uncle.
No quarrels had been heard among the family, a neighbor said. But it was reported that Ni had asked permission to work in a restaurant, which her uncle had refused, after consulting with Ni's father.
This was the second apparent case of self-harm by young people in two days.
On Saturday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy stabbed himself in the abdomen while arguing with his father at Yi-xian Road, Yangpu District.
The boy, who was not identified, was in stable condition yesterday.
The knife did not injure his internal organs, said a spokesman at Changhai Hospital.
