44 headmasters shadowed California counterparts

A total of 44 elementary and secondary school principals have benefited from the Shanghai-California Principal Shadowing Program over the past three years, the Shanghai Education Commission said today.

The Shanghai school principals spent six to eight weeks in California to visit campuses, attend class and attend meetings as a "shadow" of their US school counterparts in a bid to expose local teachers to other education experiences.

Moreover, they will keep in contact with their US counterparts via email, chat services and microblogs to discuss any educational problems they may face at their own schools, said Li Junxiu, deputy director of the commission.

Over the years, both sides have shared knowledge and experience gained from their special educational systems, said Bruce Carter, the international education liaison of California School Board Association.

Yang Rong, principal of Shanghai Experimental Elementary School, said that she had strengthened communication with parents and paid more attention to each individual child's needs after her California trip.
