Big drop in takers for entrance exam
THE number of Shanghai high school students applying to take the college entrance exam continued to slide this year, a top education official said yesterday.
In 2006, 113,600 sat the test, but this year the total will be just 52,000, or 1,000 fewer than last year, said Lu Jing, deputy director of the Shanghai Education Commission.
The main reason for the decline is the low birth rate in the city in the 1990s, he said, adding that the downward trend is set to continue until at least 2017.
Also, a lot of high school students these days are choosing to study abroad or go straight into work, which is fueling the decline, Lu said.
While some people have speculated that the dip in the number of exam-takers might make it easier to secure a university pace, Lu was quick to disabuse them.
“As there are fewer students applying, colleges and universities will make fewer places available,” he said.
“The entry threshold will not be lowered.”
Universities and colleges across China plan to recruit 43,000 Shanghai students via the entrance exam this year, Lu said.
“That represents almost 83 percent of the people sitting the test,” he said.
In recent years the ratio has remained steady above 80 percent and is set to stay that way in the near term, he said.
Meanwhile, the education commission has this year sought to make it easier for children of migrant workers based in the city to get a place at college or university.
Under a new scheme, eight universities, including Shanghai Maritime and Shanghai Normal, have allocated 111 pre-admission slots to rural students, who number about 6,000 in the city. The youngsters can also sit the college entrance exam as long as one of their parents has 120 or more residence permit points.
