Bringing education, business and science together to fight cancer

SHANGHAI Jiao Tong University has established three research and development centers with two companies and a hospital for anti-cancer research.
The project will enhance cooperation between business, education and the scientific sectors and improve patient treatment.
“Our research is developing, but our medicines are not keeping up with the market and clinical fields,” said Guo Fang, director of the Laboratory of Tumor Targeted Therapy of the university's Shanghai Center for Systems Biomedicine and the three new centers.
"With the new joint research and development centers, our professors, researchers and students will go to companies and hospital to find out their most urgent needs and know the effect of new medicines more quickly and precisely," he said.
“I think it will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our research and eventually bring better service to patients."
With US-based Sorrento Therapeutics Inc, an antibody-centric, clinical stage biopharmaceutical company, Jiao Tong will accelerate efforts in developing effective anti-cancer medicines and cultivating related talents.
With the Triplex International Biosciences (China) Co, a diagnostic medical service provider, and the Fujian Center Hospital, the university will try to break through the monopoly of foreign companies in diagnostic reagents and develop high-quality products with independent intellectual property rights.
The Fujian Cancer Hospital will cooperate with Jiao Tong in, including in developing medicine and diagnostic reagents, and establishing a rumor-targeted remote pathological consultation center, a precision treatment center, a biomedical database, a biological sample bank and a center for transforming research findings into clinical and industrial application.
