Buses must meet standards

SCHOOL buses have until September to meet the conditions of a recent national standard, education authorities said today.

Vehicles which adhere to the terms of the standard introduced last September will receive a permit valid for three years.

School buses must go through a thorough examination which includes safety features, routes and driver licences every three years.

Moreover, they have to pass a safety check every six months to keep the operation.

The city has nearly 2,000 schools buses used by about 400 schools.

All have school bus licences, 67 percent of licensed school buses in the country.

A total of 2,472 students were injured or killed in 2,468 accidents last year, according to the education authorities.
