City seeks overseas science students

SHANGHAI wants to recruit more bright science students from abroad.
It has launched a project to sponsor more international exchange programs to attract more young foreign scientists, particularly from Belt and Road countries and regions, to the city.
Another sponsorship program to support the establishment of international joint laboratories in Shanghai has also been released.
Shanghai Science and Technology Commission announced on Friday the two projects will open for application from local universities and scientific institutes.
The sponsorship projects are part of the city’s efforts to become a technology and innovation center of global influence.
According to the commission, every sponsored exchange program is expected to receive a subsidy of up to 300,000 yuan (US$45,000).
The applicant program must involve a foreign young scientist coming to Shanghai for full-time research work for at least a year.
The scientists must be no older than 45 and their nationalities are restricted to the 65 countries and regions along Belt and Road.
These include Russia, Singapore, Iran and India, as well as some other countries and regions that have signed cooperation agreements with the authority, among them are the United Kingdom, Queensland in Australia and Quebec in Canada.
