Colleges to limit size of 7 majors

SHANGHAI education authorities have asked colleges to limit the size or suspend enrollment in seven majors for undergraduate students.

The  majors — Information Management and Information System, Marketing, Electronic Information Engineering, Computer Science, Applied physics, Social Work and Sociology — have been highlighted  by Shanghai Education Committee for its deem job prospects.

Many colleges in Shanghai offer these majors for high school students, the committee said.

But these majors are rarely first choices among students taking the national entrance examination.

Some colleges have to ask students to adjust their applications to study in these sections, it said. Also, graduates with these majors suffer from low employment rates.

The committee has asked colleges to rectify the situation and to take measures to improve the teaching quality.

The education panel has promised to strengthen its regulation and control enrollment size of these majors.

It requires colleges to make proper enrollment plans, encourage and support other majors while eliminating  those with inferior teaching quality.

A college official said the warning is to remind people that some majors have been supplying more students than there is demand in the job market.

But the official added it did not mean that the society had no need for talents in these particular fields.
