Dietary guidance urged for students
A POLITICAL adviser has suggested compiling a dietary guidance for local students whose obesity rate was 17.8 percent — about three times the national average.
Chen Lei said over half of the 120 parents he surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with lunch provided by schools. They complained that fried food such as pork and chicken were served regularly, leading to the obesity among children.
He said long-term unbalanced diet and unhealthy way of cooking were leading factors for obesity. He said schools preferred fried food because they were easier to preserve and process. Other schools used too much spice or served preserved food for children.
Chen said the dietary guidance should include the optimal intake amount of rice, vegetables and meat as well as scientific ways to cook food.
