English class to get your teeth into
AROUND 100 college students lined up to get free meals from foreign “chefs” at the Minhang Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University yesterday.
But to get their free meal, students had to give their requests in English to the chefs — played by two students from the United States and Canada.
Depending on their English performance in conversations with the chef, students received larger or smaller helpings of food such as hamburgers and spaghetti.
The “Dare to Speak” activity was held by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, touring schools in Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai to encourage students to speak English.
“It’s fun and interesting to get food in this way,” said Christina Chen, who is in her first year studying mathematics.
Chen said she seldom had the opportunity to use English in class. “Even in English class, we don’t have much time to speak because there are too many students and only one foreign teacher,” Chen said.
Many students said they were very keen to speak to foreigners but were afraid to start a conversation.
