English-only pub? No way

AN online charge that the staff at a Shanghai pub would speak only English to Chinese customers was dismissed by its owner last night.

On weibo.com, a poster complained that he and his friend couldn't understand what a waitress was saying in strongly accented English and she refused to speak in Chinese.

Then, "Enjoybeingte" wrote, they were asked to leave when they complained to the manager.

But last night, the French owner of Le Bistro du Dr Wine on Fumin Road said the accusation had come out of nowhere. "It's like a joke that Chinese waiters speak English toward Chinese customers. It doesn't make sense."

He said about 80 percent of his customers were Chinese. "Of course we communicate with customers in Chinese," he said.

He said he recalled a group of people who came with no reservation who were unhappy that there were no seats for them.

When a Shanghai Daily reporter visited the pub last night, there was nothing in the staff's behavior to support the original complaint.
