Guide to private courses
PROSPECTIVE students will be able to find the best private training courses for everything from flower arranging to improving their language skills in a new yellow-paged directory, officials announced yesterday at the 6th Shanghai Education Expo.
Hundreds of kindergartens, schools, colleges, universities and training institutes are represented at the free three-day Shanghai Education Commission-sponsored education expo, which closes tomorrow at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
The directory lists private training institutions that cannot issue degrees, providing basic information about the 1,411 training institutions recognized by local education authorities.
In addition, it rates the institutions' performance, which will be reviewed annually, under five categories, from unqualified to honored.
Shanghai now has more than 5,000 private education institutions providing training courses without degrees.
"We hope to help people choose the best education institution," said Wang Hong, director of Lifelong Education Department of Shanghai Education Commission.
The directory can be found in district libraries and community schools and later will be posted on the Shanghai Education Commission's Website (www.shmec.gov.cn) in Chinese.
The directory, compiled by the commission, will be updated every year or two, officials said.
Meanwhile, the education authorities plan to include good-quality private training institutions into the school credit bank system, which allows people to achieve flexible and lifelong education. The system has currently been set up among Shanghai TV University and local district adult education schools.
