Job fair attracts thousands of students

MORE than 6,000 students attended a job fair at Songjiang University Town yesterday, the first of its kind this year for college students who will graduate next summer.

Crowds of students lined up before the fair began at 1pm. Nearly 350 companies participated in the fair, offering a total of 3,750 jobs to future graduates.

Xu Zhongxiong, a senior student majoring in vehicle engineering and from neighboring Zhejiang Province, applied for several positions at Shanghai-based companies in the auto industry.

"I want to find a job in Shanghai and stay in the city after graduation because it has a booming auto industry with a lot of opportunities for young people," Xu said.

Xu was confident of landing a job because he had done internships at some of the companies he applied.

A human resources specialist surnamed Lin with Shanghai Volkswagen, which will recruit around 500 graduates this year, said: "Students who have done internships in our company are preferred. They've learned the work process and don't need extra time to adapt to a new environment."

Lin said the pre-tax annual salary is 98,000 yuan (US$15,697) per year for undergraduates and 110,000 yuan for postgraduates.
