Kindergarten place for 'monster' boy
FIVE-YEAR-OLD Zhang Hao will be able to go to kindergarten soon after receiving plastic surgery on his face next week.
The boy, a farmer's son in Jinshan District, suffered severe facial injuries in a fire last year and other children, scared by his face, called him "Little Monster." His mother ran away from home, leaving him with his grandparents.
Local media reported his plight and he has been offered a place by the Xiaohafo Kindergarten in the district free of charge.
The Dongfeng Kindergarten, another preschool in the district, is to send teachers to his home to teach him during the treatment, the Jinshan District Education Bureau said yesterday.
On Tuesday the bureau held a hearing about the boy's preschool education and parents at the hearing showed sympathy toward Zhang, and agreed that he should go to Xiaohafo.
"In fact, the kindergarten had intended to accept him even before the media reported the story," said Jiang Zhiming, director of the bureau. "He went to the kindergarten several times, but was rejected by the other children, then he went back home."
Teachers from Dongfeng Kindergarten have visited Zhang's family, giving the boy stationery and toys as presents. Luo Yunxia, director of the kindergarten, said the boy was rather polite and had a relatively calm disposition. "He would say 'thank you' when the teachers gave him toys," said Luo.
The Jinshan District branch of the Shanghai Charity Foundation said Zhang's plight had caused much public concern. Many people contacted the foundation expressing their willingness to help the boy. "Many women said they would like to take care of Zhang instead of his mother, and other people said they would like to donate," said Ding Jiefu, deputy secretary general of the branch.
The plastic surgery will be in three phases. Next Wednesday Zhang will receive the first operation, which will repair his damaged lips and nose. The second phase will be in four to six months, and the third phase when he is 16 years old.
